Taken together, the 100 cities in this directory have an estimated 290.5 million residents (about 2,905 lakh) in 2025. The largest are Delhi (34.7 million), Mumbai (22.1 million) and Kolkata (15.8 million), followed by 97 smaller cities. Population figures come from the UN's 2024 urban-area estimates for the biggest cities and from scaled Census 2011 data for the rest.

Applying state-level hospital-bed ratios to these populations gives about 5,20,000 hospital beds, including some 26,000 ICU beds, in an estimated 14,000 hospitals (roughly 4,600 public and 9,100 private). Across India the average is about 1.39 beds per 1,000 people, well under the WHO's often-quoted benchmark of 3.

On the national ratio of one practising doctor per 811 people, these cities would have about 3,60,000 doctors and 6,50,000 nurses and midwives across all systems of medicine. Veterinarians are registered with the Veterinary Council of India and are not part of the human-health workforce counted above. Specialist head-counts are not published city by city, so these figures show scale, not how many veterinarians practise in India.

India has national infant mortality of 24 per 1,000 live births (2024) and life expectancy of about 72 years. This page lists 100 veterinarians across these cities, and every city and state below has its own page with maps, qualifications to check and answers to common questions.

General information compiled from public sources (MoHFW, SRS 2024, CDDEP / One Health Trust, UN WPP 2024, Census 2011); estimates, not official counts, and not medical advice.

What veterinarians treat

  • Vaccinations for dogs and cats
  • Deworming and tick/flea control
  • Skin and ear problems in pets
  • Pet surgery
  • Nutrition and weight management
  • Livestock and large-animal care (some clinics)

When to see a veterinarian

  • Vaccination or booster due dates
  • A pet that has stopped eating or is unusually quiet
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea or limping that lasts more than a day
  • An injury, bite or bleeding
  • A new puppy or kitten that needs a health check
Emergency: Heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, poisoning, a seizure or a road accident needs an emergency vet at once; call ahead to confirm the clinic is open. India's free ambulance number is 108.

How to choose a veterinarian

  1. Check the qualification: BVSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry), with MVSc for specialists.
  2. Verify registration with the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and your State Veterinary Council and note the registration number.
  3. Ask how long the clinic has treated the condition you have, not just how long the doctor has practised.
  4. Read recent patient feedback on more than one platform, and be wary of identical glowing reviews.
  5. Check practical details: location, clinic hours, appointment system, and whether emergency back-up exists if something goes wrong.
Not every listed clinic is open round the clock. Ask about emergency availability, the species treated and whether home visits are offered.
