Best Cardiologists in India

Start with the full list of 100 providers below, or jump to your state or city using the links further down. Each city page explains how to check qualifications and registration, what a first visit involves and what local healthcare capacity looks like.

Taken together, the 100 cities in this directory have an estimated 290.5 million residents (about 2,905 lakh) in 2025. The largest are Delhi (34.7 million), Mumbai (22.1 million) and Kolkata (15.8 million), followed by 97 smaller cities. Population figures come from the UN's 2024 urban-area estimates for the biggest cities and from scaled Census 2011 data for the rest.

Applying state-level hospital-bed ratios to these populations gives about 5,20,000 hospital beds, including some 26,000 ICU beds, in an estimated 14,000 hospitals (roughly 4,600 public and 9,100 private). Across India the average is about 1.39 beds per 1,000 people, well under the WHO's often-quoted benchmark of 3.

On the national ratio of one practising doctor per 811 people, these cities would have about 3,60,000 doctors and 6,50,000 nurses and midwives across all systems of medicine. A cardiologist is one of many specialities within that total. Specialist head-counts are not published city by city, so these figures show scale, not how many cardiologists practise in India.

India has national infant mortality of 24 per 1,000 live births (2024) and life expectancy of about 72 years. This page lists 100 cardiologists across these cities, and every city and state below has its own page with maps, qualifications to check and answers to common questions.

General information compiled from public sources (MoHFW, SRS 2024, CDDEP / One Health Trust, UN WPP 2024, Census 2011); estimates, not official counts, and not medical advice.

What cardiologists treat

  • Chest pain evaluation
  • High blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Heart failure
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Valve disease
  • Post-heart-attack follow-up

When to see a cardiologist

  • Chest discomfort on exertion
  • Breathlessness, palpitations or fainting
  • A family history of early heart disease
  • Swelling of the feet with tiredness
  • Follow-up after a heart attack, stent or bypass
Emergency: Sudden chest pain spreading to the arm or jaw, sweating or collapse may be a heart attack: call 108 immediately and do not drive yourself. India's free ambulance number is 108.

How to choose a cardiologist

  1. Check the qualification: MBBS, MD (Medicine) and DM or DNB (Cardiology).
  2. Verify registration with the NMC / State Medical Council register (look for a DM or DNB in Cardiology) and note the registration number.
  3. Ask how long the clinic has treated the condition you have, not just how long the doctor has practised.
  4. Read recent patient feedback on more than one platform, and be wary of identical glowing reviews.
  5. Check practical details: location, clinic hours, appointment system, and whether emergency back-up exists if something goes wrong.
A cardiologist (physician) is different from a cardiac surgeon (MCh CTVS). Surgeons operate on the heart; cardiologists diagnose, treat with medicines and perform procedures such as angioplasty.

Frequently asked questions: Cardiologists in India

Which cities have listed cardiologists?

We hold cardiologists listings for 100 Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Surat and others. Each city has its own page with contact details and local information.

How many cardiologists are listed in India?

This page shows 100 listed providers across 100 cities. It is a starting point rather than a complete register, so use the qualification and registration checks on each city page before booking.

Who is the best cardiologist in India?

There is no single best doctor for everyone: the right choice depends on your condition, budget and city. Shortlist two or three cardiologists, check their qualification and registration with the NMC / State Medical Council register (look for a DM or DNB in Cardiology), and compare facilities and communication. Fortis Escorts Okhla (Delhi) is the first listing on this page - confirm details by phone.

When should I see a cardiologist rather than a general physician in India?

See a cardiologist for chest discomfort on exertion, palpitations, unexplained breathlessness, fainting, or if you have had a heart attack or stent. A general physician can do the first check and refer you, but a cardiologist can interpret echo, TMT and angiography results.

Which heart tests are usually done first?

An ECG is quick and widely available. Based on your history the cardiologist may add an echocardiogram to look at heart function, a treadmill test to see how the heart behaves under stress, and blood tests such as a lipid profile. Angiography is reserved for cases where blockages are suspected.
