Taken together, the 100 cities in this directory have an estimated 290.5 million residents (about 2,905 lakh) in 2025. The largest are Delhi (34.7 million), Mumbai (22.1 million) and Kolkata (15.8 million), followed by 97 smaller cities. Population figures come from the UN's 2024 urban-area estimates for the biggest cities and from scaled Census 2011 data for the rest.

Applying state-level hospital-bed ratios to these populations gives about 5,20,000 hospital beds, including some 26,000 ICU beds, in an estimated 14,000 hospitals (roughly 4,600 public and 9,100 private). Across India the average is about 1.39 beds per 1,000 people, well under the WHO's often-quoted benchmark of 3.

On the national ratio of one practising doctor per 811 people, these cities would have about 3,60,000 doctors and 6,50,000 nurses and midwives across all systems of medicine. Mental health is the thinnest part of this workforce: the national average is only about 0.3 psychiatrists per 100,000 people (WHO Mental Health Atlas 2014), so a population this size would have only a few dozen if it matched that average. Specialist head-counts are not published city by city, so these figures show scale, not how many psychiatrists practise in India.

India has national infant mortality of 24 per 1,000 live births (2024) and life expectancy of about 72 years. This page lists 98 psychiatrists across these cities, and every city and state below has its own page with maps, qualifications to check and answers to common questions.

General information compiled from public sources (MoHFW, SRS 2024, CDDEP / One Health Trust, UN WPP 2024, Census 2011); estimates, not official counts, and not medical advice.

How to choose a psychiatrist

  1. Check the qualification: MBBS with MD (Psychiatry), DPM or DNB (Psychiatry).
  2. Verify registration with the NMC / State Medical Council register (psychologists register with the Rehabilitation Council of India, not the NMC) and note the registration number.
  3. Ask how long the clinic has treated the condition you have, not just how long the doctor has practised.
  4. Read recent patient feedback on more than one platform, and be wary of identical glowing reviews.
  5. Check practical details: location, clinic hours, appointment system, and whether emergency back-up exists if something goes wrong.
Consultations are confidential. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 protects patient rights. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medicines; psychologists provide therapy and are not medical doctors.

Frequently asked questions: Psychiatrists in India

Which cities have listed psychiatrists?

We hold psychiatrists listings for 100 Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Surat and others. Each city has its own page with contact details and local information.

How many psychiatrists are listed in India?

This page shows 98 listed providers across 100 cities. It is a starting point rather than a complete register, so use the qualification and registration checks on each city page before booking.

Who is the best psychiatrist in India?

There is no single best doctor for everyone: the right choice depends on your condition, budget and city. Shortlist two or three psychiatrists, check their qualification and registration with the NMC / State Medical Council register (psychologists register with the Rehabilitation Council of India, not the NMC), and compare facilities and communication. World Brain Center Hospital (Delhi) is the first listing on this page - confirm details by phone.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses mental health conditions, prescribes medicines and can combine them with therapy. A psychologist is trained in counselling and psychotherapy but cannot prescribe medicines. Many people benefit from seeing both.

Is it normal to see a psychiatrist for anxiety or low mood in India?

Yes. Anxiety and depression are common and treatable. Early consultation often shortens recovery, and a psychiatrist can tell you whether therapy, medicines or both are suitable.
