Taken together, the 100 cities in this directory have an estimated 290.5 million residents (about 2,905 lakh) in 2025. The largest are Delhi (34.7 million), Mumbai (22.1 million) and Kolkata (15.8 million), followed by 97 smaller cities. Population figures come from the UN's 2024 urban-area estimates for the biggest cities and from scaled Census 2011 data for the rest.

Applying state-level hospital-bed ratios to these populations gives about 5,20,000 hospital beds, including some 26,000 ICU beds, in an estimated 14,000 hospitals (roughly 4,600 public and 9,100 private). Across India the average is about 1.39 beds per 1,000 people, well under the WHO's often-quoted benchmark of 3.

On the national ratio of one practising doctor per 811 people, these cities would have about 3,60,000 doctors and 6,50,000 nurses and midwives across all systems of medicine. A general physician is usually the first doctor people see, which makes the overall doctor count the most relevant benchmark for this speciality. Specialist head-counts are not published city by city, so these figures show scale, not how many general physicians practise in India.

India has national infant mortality of 24 per 1,000 live births (2024) and life expectancy of about 72 years. This page lists 100 general physicians across these cities, and every city and state below has its own page with maps, qualifications to check and answers to common questions.

General information compiled from public sources (MoHFW, SRS 2024, CDDEP / One Health Trust, UN WPP 2024, Census 2011); estimates, not official counts, and not medical advice.

How to choose a general physician

  1. Check the qualification: MBBS, with MD (General Medicine) or DNB for consultant physicians.
  2. Verify registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) / your State Medical Council register and note the registration number.
  3. Ask what the consultation includes and whether tests, follow-ups and procedures are charged separately.
  4. Look for clear, itemised communication about costs; avoid anyone who guarantees a cure.
  5. Check practical details: location, clinic hours, appointment system, and whether emergency back-up exists if something goes wrong.
A general physician is usually the best first stop: they treat common conditions directly and refer you to the right specialist when needed.

Frequently asked questions: General Physicians in India

Which cities have listed general physicians?

We hold general physicians listings for 100 Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Surat and others. Each city has its own page with contact details and local information.

How many general physicians are listed in India?

This page shows 100 listed providers across 100 cities. It is a starting point rather than a complete register, so use the qualification and registration checks on each city page before booking.

Who is the best general physician in India?

There is no single best doctor for everyone: the right choice depends on your condition, budget and city. Shortlist two or three general physicians, check their qualification and registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) / your State Medical Council register, and compare facilities and communication. Post Graduate Department Of Internal Medicine (Delhi) is the first listing on this page - confirm details by phone.

When should I see a general physician instead of a specialist in India?

Start with a general physician when symptoms are new, unclear or involve more than one body system, such as fever with body ache, ongoing fatigue or a rise in blood pressure. They examine you, order first-line tests and refer you to a specialist only if needed, which often saves time and cost.

What tests might a physician in India ask for on a first visit?

Common first-line tests include a complete blood count, blood sugar (fasting or HbA1c), thyroid profile and kidney and liver function tests, with an ECG or chest X-ray if your symptoms suggest it. The doctor decides the list after examining you, so there is no need to book tests in advance.
